Guoh Freya Staff

I put effort into this one. 12 layers visible. I won’t post ‘em all here, but enough. Hope it shows! When I spend this much time on one, I HAVE to do the layers thing.  So here’s the starting point – Guoh’s original Freya sketch. He has a few obviously – this isn’t my first. And that’s a good thing ‘cuz I REALLY like Freya. And Guoh has a thing for anatomy I just haven’t seen often by anyone for ‘furry’ characters. Plus it seems rare that an animalistic character like Freya gets a good, ‘human’ backstory. So even though it’s been years since I played FFIX, I still remember her well.  Well, maybe not like this:

First think I did was removed most of his shading since I was going to do my own anyway, but I kept a layer with it still in place so when it came time to shade I could follow his lead.

Flat colors are standard next for me. I went with a bit more yellow than white because I needed a way to put highlights in and if it’s already white… cant get lighter than white. Hair yellow this time because… I wanted to?  As for the partial-pink tail.. hold on and I’ll explain in a sec.

I’ve had people say that my soft shading makes em look kinda ‘dirty’ – and not in a good way. So I’ve been leaning more towards hard-shading. But I really wanted to try soft again, so despite some people’s suggestion, we’re going full-soft shading this time. As for her tail, I wanted it to gradient from pink to her light color – that’s why I didn’t color that part after the bow directly. That’s here too.

Okay. Time for glossiness. Sorry, once again, I couldn’t help myself. Also highlighting which is primarily her eyes. (Higher res would reveal that best)

Technically that’s it for Freya herself, but I didn’t want to go without a background. If you think about it, she’s in a really odd position here. How is that spear point working? I mentioned the issue to someone else, but I didn’t explain well and he suggested a cityscape behind her for a background. Interesting, but the problem of what she’s sitting on and how that spear tip is supposed to work was still tough. It’s obvious that the spear is at an angle, with the tip closest to the viewer, angling away. But still, it seems most likely she’s sitting on some sort of rock or something that falls away towards the viewer.

So the rest of this is trying to do a background. I found a kinda neat cityscape from FFIX.

I just used bit of that, but it led me to how the “ledge” she’s sitting on should work.  I won’t bore you with more details. Here’s the end result:

I had to create the sort of wall she’s sitting on, but using colors from the road I think it integrates with the background okay at least. Homemade but sometimes that’s the best you can do. Also, not the tail wrapping around the sign. I thought that was cute and integrates her a bit more, even if it’s not immediately noticeable. Field blur on the city so it sharpens as it nears – primarily so Frey still stands out. Some of the shadows, upon reflection, don’t make sense with the angle of the sun. Hopefully they’re not too jarring because I’m leaving it as-is. I like it even if the light source is ambiguous at best!

Like, in the background the lightsource is obviously upper right and towards the viewer. Boob sheen reflects that too. But then the shadow of the spear indicates left and towards viewer.  Hmm… How does that work?

Ah, it’s Freya cheesecake. Don’t overanalyze or it falls apart.

Guoh Bagi

Really, it was just a matter of time before I got to this one. I mean, it was probably one of the first Guoh sketches that I saved.

But… let’s talk for a minute about Bagi, okay? Sure, I’ve seen it. Heck, you can watch the whole thing on Youtube now if you want…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDYbmowyMG8

Came out in 1984, but before you try to defend it because of the date, here’s some OTHER animes that came out in 1984.

Nausicaä

Macross: Do You Remember Love?

Urusei Yatsura

Now I’m not Anime expert, but those are all pretty classic because even >I< have seen them! But Bagi… I tell you, if it wasn’t for Bagi herself, that would be the most shit anime I’ve ever watched. Not the worst in existence, just the worst I ever watched. Why did I watch it?

I’ll give you one guess. I mean, it feels like the plot – such as it is, was written on the back of a napkin, and they lost the napkin halfway through. I’m not going to turn all movie critic on you, but… dudes… it was bad. It really felt like it was written as a bad fanfic.  A VERY bad fanfic. She even licks the kid in the jungle? And dances for him? JEEZE! I think I wrote this when I was 14 and discovered my Special Purpose! And catgirls of course.

And yet… here I am 34 years after she was first created, coloring Bagi’s junk. I guess that just goes to show that even good things CAN come out of crap movies. Should you go watch Bagi? I guess. Sure. Just don’t tell anyone >I< told you to!

And there it is. Off model badly (thank God and Guoh!), and I felt her ‘real’ color was too light so I darkened it up some. And she doesn’t have a pale belly, but all catgirls should so screw it – she does now! 🙂

I do like Bagi – the character. And parts of the movie itself were pretty inspired. Too bad it was surrounded by so much other crap. And motorcycles. And Australian hats for some reason. And Astro-Boy.

And of course, thanks again to Guoh, who just cranks these things out it seems! Damn – how can this not be popular with such a beginning sketch? Not my most detailed coloring work, but I sure as hell like it! Like…. lots.

Lyin Eyes

So, it’s time for another game of “What Guoh drawing did Bluedraggy color now?” I really can’t help it. He just makes so many good ones!

This one’s going to look a little different though. I’d watched some tutorials, primarily on doing fur and also color. So I tried to apply those at least somewhat to this one.

Also, you know when you do these, you spend a lot of time with the ‘character’. My brain starts putting together a story. Usually it’s sated by just a quick one or two sentence thing, but this time it took off. I’m writing a story. I’ve only got the first chapter done, and it’s in a rough state, but if you’d like to read it I’ve got it up at pastebin: https://pastebin.com/TwVbQDRv

It will EVENTUALLY involve this demon lioness.

Technically that’s not quite the original sketch. I’d removed some of his shading since I was going to do shading over it anyway.  I still started with flat colors, though the coloring tutorial just dove right in without them. But even if I end up completely covering the flat base with other stuff, I still like it to be under there.

Okay, here’s where the new stuff begins. I used a fur brush I downloaded for this. The brush itself adds it’s own variety to the base color in a semi-random manner so each stroke of the fur brush will contain their own slight variance.

Here I’ve used the same fur brush but with a yellower tint for the highlighting, and a bluer tint for the darker areas. I do like the result. It kind of let’s me do my gloss thing without looking like rubber.

And this is the end result after adding a background, more highlighting and a little more gloss on, shall we say… key areas.

I think I may have killed it’s popularity somewhat by adding that very dark background. But I still like it. I’ll put the story up after I get a couple more chapters done and at least somewhat proofread. I’ve not even made the blog for it yet though, so I can’t post it here yet. It will be NSFW. Undoubtedly.

‘Sup? – by Guoh

Here… check this out…

That’s my project for today. Guoh drew that and I really like it. So I hope I’m up to the task. You can just scroll to the bottom if you really don’t give a fuck how I got there. And that’s okay. The rest of this is just my layering.

So first, what colors? Well, demons should be red usually I figured. But not TOO red. I gave her two shades, one over most of her, and a slightly darker one on her scales and wings and the tip of her tail. And ears. He was pretty basic. A bluish tint to the broke sword and elbow guard. But let’s face it, the focus of this picture isn’t on him!

Shading next…

This is my hard shading added on. Hard shading gives me a Eltonpot sort of vibe. http://www.furaffinity.net/view/8062972/ (nsfw but neither is this) But I gotta have my soft side too!

FurNut had suggested some time ago that I restrict the soft shade to behind a hard shade layer, and I do like the result. Butt shading is where that’s most obvious.I also shaded the knight with the colors from the demoness here to sort of emphasize her PROXIMITY.

Okay, I can’t possibly do a demoness that is apparently reptilian to boot without glossing her up, right? I mean, if there’s anything I do, it’s GLOSS. I can barely with-strain myself from glossing up fur! (oh, wait… I don’t with-strain myself there either.) So…

Okay, THATS what I expected! I also used the gloss lay for a bit of reflectivity on the very bottom of her butt cheeks, but I have a separate reflectivity layer. From here on in, you won’t see a lot of difference though.

Reflectivity layer. It’s pretty subtle – you probably don’t notice it much. Okay, last one. Final “Sup?”:

A bit of highlighting around the eyes. Almost unnoticeable at this resolution.

For some reason, I always seem to come up with a on-or-two liner to go with these.  For this one it’s:

“Good news – you’re still alive. Bad news – about that vow of celebacy…”

Krystalized – by guoh

I wouldn’t call Krystal my gateway furry – no, I’m pretty sure that was Maid Marion. And I think Felicia would count as my first attraction to even a semi-furry girl in adulthood. (Though that’s understandable. She’s barely Furry on the Furriness scale.)

But if you dig through my oldest “art”, you’ll eventually get back to Krystal and that (time-worn) Poser mod by Little Dragon. I had a lot of fun with it back in the day. Oddly enough, to this day I’ve never played a single Starfox game. Probably won’t either. And Krystal doesn’t seem to have much of a clearly defined personality either.  She’s FLEXIBLE.

So the other day I was poking through the less-obvious stuff in Guoh’s archive at https://chivalrous-innuendo.tumblr.com/ when i came across a Krystal! I didn’t know he ever drew Krystal!

Now granted it will be a bit of a challenge. Her upper half is obviously VERY complete, but below the staff kinda fades off.  Well screw it, I’m going to try it anyway, I thought this morning.

Four hours later (yeah. really) I am done. But NO! You can’t just see it all at once! That’s cheating. Well, you can scroll. I know. But then you don’t get a taste of the AGONIZING decisions I had to make!

Like, #1 – what color do I make her little undiethongthing? It’s obviously supposed to be see-through. I tried a lot of different possibilities, but I kept coming back to the gold – even though intuitively it wouldn’t be seethru if it’s anything REMOTELY like gold. But anything else just didn’t look right. Also decided to color the inside of her ear pink with the white tufts. I tried something similar on her other ear, but it just looked weird. So I just kept it blue. Not sure what color her eyes are canon, but Doomthewolf draws them green, so that’s good enough for me!

I’ve got no less that four shading levels here, all pretty subtle but a bit of dark shading at the VERY edge. I was trying lots of different methods, all pretty soft but I wanted some hard-edged shadows for the fur on the tail at very least. It’s not heavily shaded, but I’m pretty happy with the result.

And the gloss. Gotta add the gloss. It’s just my THING, you know? But I at least kept it mostly to the chest-area where presumably fur is the thinnest. If you see a bigger version of it, the little highlighting I have on her legs and arms as a fur-brushd look close up. But in particular I do have to admit I like how the fluffy tail came out. That’s a bigger fur brush on a Color Dodge layer right there. I did add a bit of gloss to her ‘bottom’ (such as it is). Unfortunately that makes it read even more as a metal sort-of-female-version-of-a-codpiece rather than see through fabric, which was surely what Guoh intended.

Oh well, if Batman can have nipples on his bat suit, Krystal can have a pussy-slit in her codpiece I guess!

And the highlights, mostly the eyes and the tiara. Voila! Krystalized!  Yeah, there’s issues still. I didn’t even want to try and draw-in the unfinished part. Her right arm is slightly wonky. Background is all but nonexistent. What is it? Nothing really. But it kinda looks like a river far, far below while Krystal is high in the clouds above. For some reason. 🙂  Tried a few others but I liked this best, even  if it makes little sense.

How Em-bare-ass-ing!

I’ve seen this Guoh drawing before, usually in Kobold threads on 4chan. I decided to color it tonight. Spent way longer than I should on a Sunday night, but I was in the zone! 🙂

Again, I just love how Guoh tells a story, as well as having such awesome anatomy. I’ve gotten far too popular by just coloring his stuff. But it sure is fun.

I figure she’s saying something like:

“Oh no! My underwear were still wet, so I went ‘commando’ this morning. I meant to put them on when they were dry but I forgot. You won’t tell the others, will you? I didn’t mean to flash you!”

She looks so embarrassed, I wanna hug her and tell her it’s okay, but then things might get more complicated.

My colored version:

Yup – Another Guoh Lizard I colored.

Got another one. I’ll just cut to the chase and then do the layer thing after. Here’s the original by Guoh…

And my final version…

The rest here is just curiosities. First, I did remove a lot of his hash-shading since I was going to shade it on my own anyway.

Flat colors of course. As a plain nude, I thought a lighter chest would add a bit of interest.

I was then going to shade it as I normally do – 2 levels with pretty hard edges:

But I backed off of that. I didn’t much like where it was headed, so I changed course and did just about the softest shading I could do.

Time for the requisite gloss and highlights..

I was fudging around with Gradients too and via a mistake, I also came up with this, which I think is at least kinda unique.

Interesting anyway. Well, that’s it. Contemplative Kobold. I posted it to a Discord I’m on that the first reaction was she’s a Thinking Kobold. She’s contemplating, “Why do I have tits?”.

Guoh – Game of Layers

Time to play the Game of Layers again! Another Guoh drawing I colored, so we’ll get that out of the way right off. But this time I’m going to post in a weird order so see if you can guess where it’s going. First up, just the dark shade layer and the highlights…

No, I know. That tells you nothing. Now this one is weird. It’s the Color Dodge (I call it the SHEEN layer). It’s essentially a black-and-white layer but really does it’s magic on color. Black does nothing, white brightens in a particular way. But here I have no colors behind it so it’s just black. But it does give you a big clue where it’s going…

So by now you probably have a fairly decent idea of the finaly shape anyway. Okay, it gets easier from here. The purple is the dark shade layer above. now here it is with the light shade layer as well…

Here you really notice the furred edges I put onto it. And by now you’ve figured out it has pretty massive boobs. Why yes, she does! So we can stop calling her ‘it’ now! Okay, to avoid giving it away quite yet, let’s just throw my blurred background behind it. With colors behind it, the black/white Color Dodge (Sheen) layer suddenly becomes… colored.

Okay. I’ve teased long enough. Time to reveal – almost. Just the flat colors though first…

What is it? A rat in a bikini? Nope. Before the final version, here’s the original sketch by Guoh. Guoh is my god, see. He whips this stuff out and I can’t help but to color it! I chose this one because someone mentioned that my Mona Lisard was flat chested. Well this is the opposite of flat!

And finally, the fully colored version all stuck together

Ta Da!

Yet More Guoh Naughty Lizards

I really, truly hope Guoh is okay with these, because they’re fun as hell to color for me!

I wonder if I should just post the end result or do another build up… Think I’ll do the build-up again.

Here’s the starting sketch from Guoh. Oh, did I mention this is my nsfw blog? I hope so!

Flat colors. Due to a sort of joke I was supposed to do it in Chartreuse, but I ended up with more of a military-drab green and greenish yellow belly…

Red eyes because I kinda like em. Pink naughty bits because naughty bits should always be pink. Then of course the 1st level shading…

I pretty much always do 2 shading levels now. Also for the scalies I try to use a more hard-edge shadow.

But it really comes to life with the highlights and my trademarked (not trademarked) shiny sheeny layer. I love doing that layer, and if it makes them look like they’re made of rubber, sorry – that’s kinda the intent.

That’s it. I REALLY REALLY like this one as it implies a bit of a story just in her expression and position. Looks like she’s been sparring with someone and got knocked down – but she’s getting back up and looks like she’s saying somethig like, “Oh! You’re going to be like that are you? Well then, let’s rock and roll!”
